Anglesey Winter Show 2024 Celebrates a Remarkable Event

The Anglesey Winter Show 2024 was a great success, with two full days of thrilling competition showcasing the very best in livestock, crafts, cookery, floral displays, photography, horses, small pets, and dogs. A huge thank you to everyone who participated – your passion and hard work are what make this event so special.


This year’s show attracted competitors from across the UK, with standout participants such as a sheep exhibitor who travelled all the way from Gloucestershire and a horse exhibitor from Pembrokeshire. It’s this kind of dedication and spirit that makes the Anglesey Winter Show a highlight on the agricultural calendar!


Highlights of the Livestock Competitions:

  • Dairy Cattle: Six fantastic farms went head-to-head in the “Group of 6 Cows or Heifers in Milk” category, judged by Mr. Richard Williams from Pontllyfni. T D & N Roberts & Sons of Fferam Y Llan took first place. We thank Leprino Foods Ltd. for sponsoring this class.

  • Beef: In the beef section, judged by Mr. Geraint Williams and Mr. Owain Morgan, the top winners included Ms. Ela Mair (Native Championship Champion with Fedwen Tessa V291) and Mr. Llyr Hughes (Supreme Pedigree Champion with Pabo Vmoney). Mr. Hughes also triumphed in the Anglesey Bred Championship with his heifer Sexy Spice. Supreme Championship honours went to Mr. & Mrs. O. W. & G. L. Williams with LwLw, with Reserve Champion awarded to Mr. Llyr Hughes with Sexy Spice, celebrating an outstanding display of cattle quality and competition.

  • Sheep: The sheep section was as strong as ever, with Mr. Dyfan Evans, Corwen, naming Mr. Tirion Griffiths taking home the Continental and Supreme Pair of Lambs Championship.

  • Young Handlers: Judged by Miss Elain Evans, Corwen, young competitors displayed remarkable talent across all age groups. Top prizes were awarded to Master Jac Glyn Jones, Miss Magi Evans, Master Ianto Evans, and Miss Beca Llyn Jones.


Produce and Handicrafts Highlights:

  • Our produce and handicrafts sections were a celebration of local talent and creativity. We thank the dedicated judges in the cooking, crafts, floral, farm produce, and eggs sections, whose expertise and commitment contributed greatly to this year’s event. A big thank you to our judges – including Mr. Gareth Jones, Gwaenfynydd; Mr. Adrian Parry; Mr. & Mrs. John V Jones, Society Presidents; Mr. Derec Owen; Mr. David Gerrard & Mr. Morgan Chapman, Capel Coch for their expertise in bringing out the best of local talent.


Cookery and Handicrafts Highlights:

  • Best Exhibit in Open Cookery: Gwen Daw with a traditional Bara Brith loaf.

  • Best Exhibit in Children’s Cookery: Master Jack Glynn with his festive Christmas Tree Pizza.

  • Best Exhibit in YFC Cookery: Mr. Jac Davies with a Winter Fruits Pavlova.


In handicrafts and additional categories, winners were as follows:

  • Best Exhibit in Open Handicrafts: Mrs. Sarah Astley for her Christmas-themed sewn item.

  • Best Exhibit in Children’s Handicrafts: Miss Alys Mair Pugh with a Christmas Garland (Any Craft Medium).

  • Best Exhibit in Photography: Miss Ania Roberts with My Favourite Place.

  • Best Exhibit in Floral Section: Miss Greta Stuart with her stunning floral competition entry.

  • Best Exhibit in Liqueurs: Enid M. Williams with a bottle of Sloe Gin.

  • Champion Exhibit in Egg Section: Mr. O.T. Jones.

 

Equestrian Highlights:

The equestrian section saw outstanding performances. Special thanks to all the judges for their expertise in selecting the winners

  • Non-Welsh Championship: Champion Mr. Huw Gruffydd with Caereini Brenhines Y Ser.

  • Welsh Championship: Champion Louis Dennis with Arthen Cadfridog; Reserve Champion Mr. Gethin Pritchard with Friars Crystal Wedding.


Congratulations to all competitors for a truly impressive showcase of talent and hard work.


Small Pets Highlights:

This year’s small pets section was historic, with junior exhibitor Lloyd Davies sweeping major categories, winning Best Rabbit, Best Guinea Pig, and Best Other Pet, along with the Supreme and Reserve Supreme titles. Rosie Chown and her young son Arthur also shined, winning Best Overall Reptile and Best Overall Rodent respectively, with Arthur's delightful harvest mice.

 

Dog Show:

Mrs. Michelle Ryznar judged the Dog Show, awarding Champion to Alaw Morris Jones with Seren and Reserve Champion to Elain Morgan with Daphnie.


Young Farmers:

Saturday was filled with excitement as Young Farmers competed in various events. We also extend our thanks to Santa Claus for coming along to collect letters from the children.

The Anglesey Agricultural Society extends a big thank you to all who supported this year’s Winter Fair. Special thanks go to our volunteers who made the show possible, and to Phill Hen for capturing the event through amazing photography.
